Apprenticeship Information

​

The Apprentice Electrician works directly under the supervision of and assists a qualified Journeyman Electrician. The Apprentice will learn to install or maintain a variety of approved wiring methods for distribution of electrical light, heat, power, radio and signaling utilization systems in existing or new buildings under contruction of residential, commercial and industrial occupancies; including street and highway lighting, traffic signal and other outdoor above and below grade installations.

Minimum Requirements INSIDE/COMMERCIAL WIREMAN APPRENTICE:

Each applicant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older, with proof of identification, such as a driver's license or identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (Must have a valid driver's license at the time of indenture.)

-AND-

  • Be a High School graduate or equivalent (Must submit proof i.e. Diploma, GED, etc.)

-AND-

  • Have completed one full year (2 semesters) of algebra (or higher math) in High School with a "C" or better in each semester, or one semester of algebra in College with a passing grade of "C" or better. (Classes do not have to be in sequence.)

  • You must provide an OFFICIAL PRINTOUT of your High School Transcripts in a SEALED envelope signed by the Registrar's Office that contains the algebra requirement.  *If you did not take algebra in High School, you must also provide your OFFICIAL College Transcript as proof of meeting the algebra requirement 

  • Transcripts that do not clearly state Algebra as a subject (for example: Mathematics I - III, Integrated Math 1-3, Common Core 1-3) will require written clarification from a school or district representative stating that the curriculum includes Algebra at the minimum.

  •  NO EXCEPTIONS!

  • Applicant will be required to take and pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test once you are accepted as an apprentice. NO EXCEPTIONS!

* Aptitude tests are held approximately 1-3 months after qualifying as an applicant. Test notification will be sent by mail.

 

**Oral interview takes about 1-3 months to be scheduled once you pass the Aptitude test. Interview notification will be send by mail. 

INSIDE COMMERCIAL WIREMAN REQUIREMENTS & PROCEDURES

Inside Commercial Requirements

Inside Commercial Wireman Apprenticeship Requirements:

  1. Must have photo identification; California driver’s license accepted.

  2. Must be at least 18 years old as of the date of application.

  3. Must have a High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.

  4. Must have one year (two semesters) of high school Algebra, with a “C” grade or better, or one (1) semester of college algebra with at least a “C” average. Must show proof from a recognized/accredited institution.

  5. Proof of diploma or GED and Transcript must be presented in English when filing application.

  6. Must have valid California Driver’s License prior to being referred to work and a reliable source of transportation.

  7. Must be physically able to do construction work, work at various heights on ladders and in cramped quarters.

  8. Must be able to distinguish colors (i.e. black, red, blue, green, brown, orange, yellow, purple, grey & white.)

  9. Must be able to read, hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings in English.

  10. Must have the ability to wake up early and reach jobsites within our jurisdiction consistently and on-time.

  11. Must be willing to take a placement test.

  12.  Individuals who can verify (Social Security report is required for verification) that they have worked a minimum of four thousand (4,000) hours in electrical construction for a C-10 contractor do not need to meet the requirements of items 3 & 4.

  13. Must have an Active/Valid E-Mail to be notified at any time about your Application.

Procedures:

  1. Complete application and upload Diploma/GED on the website during the first week of month ONLY.

  2. Official transcripts (in sealed envelope from institution) must be mailed or dropped off at ETASV Office. Dropbox
    located in lobby.

  3. Qualified applicants will be notified by mail the date, time, and location of testing. It is mandatory to appear as
    scheduled.

  4. The major areas of test battery are algebraic functions and reading comprehension.

  5. Qualified applicants will be given an oral interview.

  6. Applications will remain on file for up to two years.

  7. Job placements are made as openings occur.

  8. Drug screening will precede placement. There is a zero tolerance policy.

  9. Apprentices must purchase schools books and hand tools. There are no fees for apprentice classes.

Characteristics of the Trade:

  1. The trade requires physical effort on the part of the apprentice. Climbing, crouching, working at high locations and in cramped quarters. Mechanical ability and finger dexterity are essential.

  2. Regular attendance at work and class are required.

  3. The apprentice must comply with standards, policies, and procedures.

  4. The hourly wage rate and benefits are subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  5. There are ten (10) pay periods in the apprenticeship. Advancement is based on work hours and completion of school requirements.

  6. Selection of apprentices is made on the basis of qualifications without regard to sex, race, creed, color or national origin.

  7. Apprenticeship training program will be five (5) years in duration. Graduates become Journeymen Electricians.
